After months of gray skies and chilly temperatures, spring has finally arrived! The longer days, warmer temperatures, and blooming landscapes are nature's invitation to leave winter's lethargy behind and embrace outdoor living again. Here's how you can shake off the last of those winter blues. It's time to make the most of this rejuvenating season to boost both your physical health and mental wellbeing.
Beach Trips and River Days Are Back!
Nothing says "goodbye winter" quite like feeling sand between your toes! Beach visits offer multiple health benefits beyond just the joy of sunshine. Walking on sand provides natural resistance training, burning more calories than walking on pavement. The sound of waves has been proven to reduce stress hormones and promote relaxation. Even if swimming isn't an option yet, a beach stroll, building sandcastles, or playing volleyball can get your heart rate up while filling your lungs with fresh sea air.
We all know sunny days does not mean warm beaches here though. That water is cold! Make sure to pack jackets, weather-appropriate swimwear, plenty of towels and check the weather before you head out.
Hit the Trails
Spring hiking is a feast for the senses. Witness nature's reawakening with wildflowers dotting the trails, birds returning from migration, and fresh green growth everywhere. Hiking combines cardiovascular exercise with the cognitive benefits of being in nature - studies show that time in green spaces reduces anxiety, improves mood, and enhances creativity.
Start with shorter trails if you've been inactive during winter, gradually building your endurance as the season progresses. Wear non-slip, supportive shoes because all that mud hasn't dried up yet and a slip or fall is not the best way to start off the warm season.
Garden Your Way to Wellness
Gardening is the perfect spring activity that combines gentle exercise with the satisfaction of creating beauty and potentially growing your own food. Digging, planting, and weeding engage multiple muscle groups while being gentle on joints. The vitamin D from sunshine and the bacteria in soil have both been linked to improved mood and immune function. Whether you have acres of land or just a few pots on a balcony, nurturing plants provides a sense of accomplishment and connection to natural cycles.
New to gardening and need some guidance? Stanford Inn offers different types of gardening classes for those looking to expand their gardening knowledge. You can find more information here.

Outdoor Yoga Sessions
Take your practice outside! Outdoor yoga combines mindfulness with nature's backdrop, creating a uniquely refreshing experience. Find a quiet spot in a park, on your patio, or even on the beach at sunrise. The natural elements add new dimensions to your practice - balancing on slightly uneven ground engages more stabilizing muscles, while the sounds of nature enhance meditative aspects.
The botanical gardens has a weekly outdoor yoga session starting in May. You can find more information about the class here.
Community Sports Leagues
Spring is when recreational sports leagues bloom! Join a softball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, or kickball league to combine socializing with physical activity. These leagues typically welcome all skill levels, making them perfect for both seasoned athletes and first-timers. The combination of team camaraderie, friendly competition, and regular exercise creates powerful motivation to stay active throughout the season.
Farmers Market Adventures
Make weekly farmers market visits part of your spring routine. Beyond finding the freshest local produce, farmers markets involve walking, social interaction, and exposure to new healthy foods. Expand your horizon by trying something new from the vendors! Eating in a way that is congruent with the seasons has been shown to be beneficial to your health. Many markets also feature live music and activities, turning grocery shopping into a festive community event and a great way to support local small businesses.
Information about our local farmer's market can be found here! Usually it is Wednesdays afternoons on Franklin between Pine and Laurel.
Outdoor Photography Walks
Combine creativity with exercise by taking photography walks. The hunt for beautiful spring images will have you walking farther than you might realize, climbing hills for better vantage points, and crouching to capture that perfect wildflower close-up. This mindful activity encourages you to notice details in your environment you might otherwise miss, fostering appreciation for the changing season. Just don't get too close to the edge of the cliffs trying to get the perfect shot.

The Spring Refresh Challenge
This spring, challenge yourself to spend at least 15 minutes outdoors every day. Whether it's morning coffee on the porch, an evening walk, or a weekend adventure, consistent outdoor time will improve your mood, energy levels, and overall health. Your body and mind will thank you for embracing nature's invitation to rejuvenate! Spring is nature's way of saying "let's party!" - so get out there and join the celebration!
